Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein: A 20-Year Journey in Horror Cinema

Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein might just rival that of Dr. Frankenstein himself. At the recent Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared a video message, teasing his much-anticipated adaptation of the classic tale. Although a trailer won't be available until this summer, Netflix treated fans to a first-look image featuring Oscar Isaac as the iconic mad scientist.

In the video, as reported by Variety, del Toro expressed his deep connection to the project, stating, "This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years. I've been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards his collection of Frankenstein memorabilia housed in his renowned Bleak House.

Del Toro also gave a glimpse of some exclusive footage, showcasing Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, who plays a seemingly affluent aristocrat. Additionally, the footage introduced Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster, characterized by long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a striking glint of red in his eyes. Unfortunately, this footage is not currently available online.

Reflecting on the personal significance of the project, del Toro remarked, "You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn't get more personal than this." His dedication to bringing Frankenstein to life on screen is evident, having worked tirelessly on the project for decades. Let's delve into the lengthy journey of Netflix's upcoming Frankenstein film.
