"Breath of Fire IV Revived on PC After 25 Years"

May 04,2025 Author: Isaac

After a 25-year hiatus, Capcom's cherished role-playing game, Breath of Fire IV, has made a triumphant return to the PC gaming scene. Originally launched on the PlayStation in Japan and North America in 2000, followed by a European release a year later, the game also saw a PC port in Europe and Japan in 2003. The story centers around Ryu, a protagonist with the unique ability to transform into a dragon, who joins forces with other warriors to thwart an emperor's destructive ambitions.

Thanks to GOG's ongoing Preservation Program, Breath of Fire IV has been meticulously updated for today's PCs and is now available DRM-free on their platform. The revamped version boasts full optimization for modern systems, ensuring compatibility with Windows 10 and 11. Players can enjoy the game in both English and Japanese, with enhanced graphics courtesy of an upgraded DirectX renderer. New display options such as Windowed Mode, V-Sync, Anti-Aliasing, and improved gamma correction further elevate the visual experience. Additionally, the audio engine has been overhauled, restoring previously missing environmental sounds and introducing new configuration options for an immersive auditory experience.

Breath of Fire IV isn't the only classic making a comeback on GOG today. The platform is also reviving several other timeless titles as part of its Preservation Program. The complete list includes:

  • Ultima Underworld 1+2
  • Ultima 9: Ascension
  • Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire
  • Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams
  • Worms: Armageddon
  • Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood
  • Realms of the Haunting
  • Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon
  • Stonekeep

This means that the entire Ultima series, along with other classic games, is now preserved and readily accessible on GOG, allowing a new generation of gamers to experience these iconic titles.
