Hnefatafl, an ancient Scandinavian board game, predates chess and boasts variants played across medieval Europe. This "Tafl" game pits two armies of unequal size against each other: the black invaders seeking to capture the white king, and the white defenders striving to protect their king and ensure his escape.

Often dubbed the "Game of the Vikings," Hnefatafl evokes historical narratives, from Muscovite invasions of Sweden to Viking raids on Britain. The core objective, however, remains consistent: the king's capture or escape.
