In recent years, talk of a sequel to The Last of Us has captivated online communities. Despite the polarizing response to its second chapter, many players eagerly anticipated that Naughty Dog might address the issues in The Last of Us Part III or explore the franchise’s universe further through a spin-off. However, Neil Druckmann’s unexpected statement left even the most loyal fans reeling.
During a joint interview with Craig Mazin, the head of Naughty Dog and co-writer of the game adaptations, Druckmann opened up about his experiences following the release of the sequel during the pandemic. He admitted to feeling unwell, consumed by intrusive thoughts, and spiraling into self-doubt when isolated and exposed to internet criticism. Reading reviews and forum debates about his work intensified these feelings, leading him to question whether he had truly created something worthwhile.
When asked about the possibility of a third installment, Druckmann sighed and acknowledged the inevitable question. Yet, his response was clear: fans shouldn’t hold their breath for another The Last of Us, as this might very well be the end of the series.
