To unlock animals for your Hideout, both Naoe and Yasuke can engage with different breeds of cats and dogs throughout the game. Each time you pet a new breed that you haven't interacted with before, it becomes available for your Hideout. You can encounter a variety of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens, including the special stray from the pre-order DLC quest "Thrown to the Dogs."
Yasuke also has a unique way to unlock small animals by painting them. You can find and document animals like rabbits, fox kits, tanukis, and monkeys in the wild, and subsequently add these critters to your Hideout.
For those looking to add farm animals, you can purchase oxen and goats from vendors across Japan, using varying amounts of mon.

Choose the animal you wish to add, and you’ll be taken to an overhead view of the Hideout. Here, you can select an open grid on the map to place your new companion. Remember, animals will roam freely once you exit build mode, so they might not always be in the same spot when you return for some quality time with them.
You can add multiple instances of the same animal, including the "Thrown to the Dogs" pup, but there’s a limit to the total number of animals you can have at once. You can always remove or replace animals at any time by using the build mode options.
