The enduring fascination with John Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi horror classic The Thing lies largely in its ambiguous conclusion. For over four decades, fans have debated whether Kurt Russell's R.J. MacReady or Keith David's Childs becomes the titular creature in the final scenes. Carpenter deliberately left viewers with no definitive answer—until recently.
During a special 4K screening at Los Angeles' David Geffen Theater on March 22, the horror maestro told Parasite and Mickey 17 director Bong Joon Ho that a "significant clue" hidden within the film reveals who ultimately transforms. He jokingly added he'd share this secret with anyone willing to send an unspecified amount of money "to my house in an envelope."
Carpenter also disclosed that even the actors remained unaware of the final outcome. "They had no idea," he confessed. "But they had to portray humanity, you understand. The creature replicates flawlessly. It could be any one of us—even someone in this audience—with no way to tell. I knew the truth; they didn't."
Following the screening, independent filmmaker Joe Russo (not the MCU director) shared his interpretation via X/Twitter. "I believe I've identified that clue," Russo announced.
Russo pointed to the scene where MacReady learns the creature replicates at cellular level, meaning characters should only consume items they've personally handled. Despite this warning, MacReady shares his whiskey with Childs in the finale. While this could suggest forgetfulness, Russo argues it indicates MacReady is already The Thing. "The moment Childs drinks from that bottle, The Thing has prevailed," Russo explains. "It has defeated its most skeptical remaining threat."
The film's genius lies in ending before confirmation, but Russo provided additional evidence. He noted MacReady's final line—"Why don't we just wait here for a little while, see what happens?"—becomes profoundly ironic if he's already transformed. Russo's analysis also reinterprets the creature's defeat: "Did you witness its destruction... or watch a superior imitation eliminate an inferior one to better infiltrate society after rescue?"

While many fans found the theory compelling, others maintained Childs was the transformed character. "I still believe it's Childs—we lose track of his whereabouts long before the finale. Though Keith David insists he's definitely human," one fan commented. Russo responded: "Carpenter stated neither actor knew... Childs always struck me as a deliberate misdirection."
Regardless of interpretation, the theory warrants serious consideration. Carpenter continues to engage and surprise audiences decades later, and we're fortunate to still uncover new layers of his cinematic genius.
