Gaming hardware giant ASUS has recently teased what could potentially be an Xbox-branded handheld device. The ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) X/Twitter account posted a teaser featuring a "little robot friend" working on something intriguing, giving fans a sneak peek at both an ROG Xbox controller and a handheld system.
This development follows last month's IGN report on Microsoft's ambitious plans for new gaming hardware, which reportedly includes a next-gen Xbox slated for 2027 and an Xbox-branded handheld that might launch as early as later in 2025. The handheld in ASUS's teaser distinctly showcases Xbox-specific buttons (Y, B, A, and X) instead of those found on PlayStation or Nintendo devices. Additionally, it features a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four smaller buttons, though these are somewhat obscured in the teaser.
Adding to the buzz, the official Xbox account responded to ASUS's tweet with a playful wide-eyed gif, hinting at an imminent reveal. While no specific reveal date or launch window has been announced, the monitor in the teaser suggests the handheld's key features will include "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds," and a "fresh look!"
In January, Microsoft’s VP of 'Next Generation,' Jason Ronald, shared with The Verge that the company aims to blend Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds developed by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer.
While this Xbox-branded handheld isn't a direct Microsoft product, the company is also reportedly working on its own console, expected to launch in 2027 alongside the next-gen Xbox. Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has hinted that a first-party Xbox handheld is still years away. Meanwhile, the successor to the Xbox Series X is reportedly in full production and set to release in two years, aligning with Xbox president Sarah Bond's statement about moving "full speed ahead on our next generation hardware" to deliver a significant technological leap.
Amidst these developments, there's ongoing speculation about the future of gaming consoles. Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, recently suggested a future where gaming might rely less on traditional consoles, despite major companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continuing to innovate. Nintendo's highly anticipated Switch 2 is set to be showcased in a Nintendo Direct on April 2, where fans are eager to learn about its features, release date, and pre-order details.
