How to Beat and Capture Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Mar 21,2025 Author: Andrew

Ready to conquer the Chatacabra, whether by slaying it or capturing it? This long-tongued amphibian is one of the first monsters you'll encounter in *Monster Hunter Wilds*, and mastering its defeat is key to early game success. Let's dive into effective strategies for both approaches.

How to Beat Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Chatacabra

Weaknesses: Ice, Thunder
Resistances: N/A
Immunities: Sonic Bomb

The Chatacabra, a sizable frog-like monster, primarily relies on close-range attacks using its long tongue. It may also attempt a rush attack if you maintain distance. While any weapon can be effective against this relatively easy opponent, the Bow and Charge Blade might be slightly less efficient due to their multi-hit attacks being less effective against its smaller size.

Its tongue-based attacks make positioning crucial. Avoid being directly in front of it. Besides its licking attack, the Chatacabra slams its front limbs into the ground after a noticeable rearing motion. The only significant attack from a distance involves it raising its head and sweeping its tongue behind it.

The optimal strategy is to stay to its sides, dodging or blocking its slam attack. Exploiting its elemental weaknesses (Ice and Thunder) will significantly accelerate the fight. With the right approach, you'll be sporting a new frog-skin hat in no time!

How to Capture Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Capturing Chatacabra

Monster capture in Monster Hunter Wilds follows a consistent pattern, and the flightless Chatacabra simplifies the process. You'll need either a Shock Trap or a Pitfall Trap, along with two Tranquilizer Bombs. However, bringing one of each trap and a full eight Tranq Bombs is recommended for a safety margin.

Battle the Chatacabra until its icon on the mini-map displays a small skull, indicating its final retreat attempt. Follow it, set your chosen trap, and lure it inside. Once trapped, use two Tranq Bombs to tranquilize it, and the capture is complete!
