TouchArcade Rating:
Mobile premium game updates usually improve optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village on iOS and iPadOS introduces an online DRM system. This DRM verifies purchase history upon game launch, checking for ownership of the game and any DLC. Refusal results in game closure. While this takes only seconds with an internet connection, it eliminates offline play—a significant drawback for previously offline-capable titles.
Pre-update testing confirmed offline functionality. Post-update, the DRM alert appears, forcing online verification on each launch. While this may not affect all players, the addition of this always-on DRM to already-purchased games is concerning. Ideally, Capcom would implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking less frequently. This update negatively impacts the recommendation of Capcom's premium mobile ports.
