Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a splash in the virtual reality (VR) world with its upcoming release on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality (MR) gaming.

Civilization 7 VR Meta Quest 3

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity

Announced at the Civ World Summit on February 8th, 2025, Civ VII VR will be a Meta Quest exclusive, at least for now. 2K Games and Firaxis Games expressed excitement about this new frontier for the strategy game. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, highlighted the anticipation for the full launch, while Meta's Chris Pruett emphasized the strong momentum in mixed reality gaming, citing Civ VII VR as a key example. Note that while Civ VII is launching on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version isn't currently planned.

Civilization 7 VR Command Table

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer

Civ VII VR offers a unique tabletop-style experience. Players strategize from a "Command Table," allowing for detailed views of units and buildings. Seamless switching between VR and MR modes is available, with the VR environment presenting a personalized museum vista and the MR adapting to the player's physical space.

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest headsets. Players can team up against AI or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback

Firaxis Games is actively responding to player feedback gathered during Civ VII's early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability, addressing concerns raised on Steam. Future updates will also include community-requested features like multiplayer teams and diverse map types. A quality-of-life update in March is planned, focusing on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.

Release Information

Civilization VII VR is slated for a Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise date yet to be announced. The standard Civ VII launches worldwide on February 11th, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. For more details, visit our Civilization VII page.
