In the latest wave of Stephen King adaptations, fans are in for a thrilling treat as Netflix gears up to unleash a new film version of the chilling classic, "Cujo." According to Deadline, the streaming giant has enlisted Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment to produce this eagerly anticipated remake. While the project is still in its early stages, with no writers, directors, or cast members attached yet, the anticipation is already building among horror enthusiasts.
Originally published in 1981, Stephen King's "Cujo" was swiftly adapted into a cult classic horror film in 1983, penned by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner and directed by Lewis Teague. The gripping tale revolves around a determined mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who finds herself trapped in a car with her young son as they confront the menacing Cujo. Once a sweet family dog, Cujo becomes a deadly threat after being bitten by a rabid bat. The duo must fight for their lives as they face the relentless beast outside their vehicle, battling not only Cujo but also the looming threat of heatstroke.
"Cujo" is just one of many Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned to the big screen, and there's been a notable resurgence of King adaptations lately. Oz Perkins' take on King's short story "The Monkey" was released in February, and fans can look forward to more this year, including Glen Powell's version of "The Running Man" and JT Mollner's adaptation of "The Long Walk," both also produced by Roy Lee and Vertigo. Additionally, the "IT" prequel series "Welcome to Derry" is set to premiere on HBO. The iconic "Carrie" is also being reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, brought to life by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.
Stephen King aficionados have been treated to a feast of adaptations recently, and with the upcoming "Cujo" remake, the culinary delights just keep coming.
