Michael Sarnoski, acclaimed director of A Quiet Place: Day One, is reportedly set to helm the live-action adaptation of Kojima Productions' Death Stranding. According to Deadline, Sarnoski will both write and direct the project, with production being a collaboration between A24, Kojima Productions, and Square Peg. Sarnoski has previously directed and penned the screenplay for the A Quiet Place spin-off Day One and the 2021 film Pig, which starred Nicolas Cage. He's also attached to write and direct The Death of Robin Hood, another A24 venture.
Details about the Death Stranding adaptation remain scarce. The original 2019 game tasked players with traversing a post-apocalyptic wasteland to reconnect a fragmented America, all while evading nightmarish creatures and navigating bizarre phenomena. Given Hideo Kojima's flair for cinematic storytelling, the game is ripe for a film adaptation.
Death Stranding boasted a star-studded cast including Norman Reedus as protagonist Sam Bridges, alongside Léa Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. It remains to be seen whether these actors will return for the live-action version.
Fans of the series can also look forward to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, set to launch on June 26, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5. This sequel introduces new talent to the franchise, including Luca Marinelli and Elle Fanning.
Amidst other Kojima-related projects, such as the ongoing development of the Metal Gear Solid movie, the Death Stranding adaptation appears well-positioned to successfully transition from game to film, given its rich narrative and cinematic elements.
