FF9 Remake Speculation Intensifies With 25th Anniversary Website Teasing Multiple Projects

Final Fantasy 9 has unveiled its 25th anniversary website featuring multiple upcoming initiatives. Discover what's planned for this iconic RPG's milestone celebration and what future projects might emerge.

Final Fantasy 9 Celebrates 25th Anniversary This Year

25th Anniversary Website Launched

Square Enix Reveals FF9 Anniversary Plans With Merchandise and Potential Projects

Square Enix has launched a dedicated website to celebrate Final Fantasy 9's quarter-century anniversary. The site confirms they're "preparing various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations" for the occasion.

The anniversary store features an array of FF9 collectibles including character figurines, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and illustrated storybooks. Beyond these confirmed items, Square Enix promises additional announcements leading up to the anniversary date.

Originally launching on July 7, 2000 for PlayStation, FF9 has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game saw re-releases through Square Enix's 2012 Ultimate Box collection, mobile remasters in 2016, and modern console ports between 2017-2019.

Potential FF9 Remake and Forgotten Anime Project

FF9 Remake Speculation Heats Up Amid Anniversary Celebrations

The anniversary website's launch has reignited speculation about a potential FF9 remake. Following the successful Final Fantasy VII remake series, fans speculate FF9 - ranked 4th in NHK's 2019 FF popularity poll - might receive similar treatment, though no official confirmation exists.

Another unanswered question concerns the planned FF9 anime. Announced in 2021 as "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," the series would have explored the lives of Vivi's descendants a decade after the original story. French studio Cyber Group, originally handling distribution, filed for bankruptcy in late 2024, though interested buyers including United Smile and Newen Studios have expressed intentions to continue the project.
