Sports Interactive and Sega have announced the cancellation of Football Manager 25 across all platforms. This marks the first time the long-running series has skipped a year since its 2004 debut.
The developer had touted FM25 as a significant technical and visual leap, aiming for a "generational advancement." However, the transition to the Unity game engine proved challenging, particularly impacting the player experience and user interface.
The decision, revealed alongside Sega Sammy Holdings' financial results (which include a writedown of FM25-related costs), followed extensive internal discussions. Sega has confirmed that no job losses resulted from the cancellation.
There will be no FM24 update with 2024/25 season data; resources are fully dedicated to FM26. Discussions are underway with platform holders and licensors regarding potential extensions of FM24 agreements on services like Game Pass.

FM25 faced two prior delays before its cancellation (originally slated for March 2025). Sports Interactive is now concentrating on Football Manager 26, anticipated for its usual November release window. Refunds are being offered to those who pre-ordered FM25.
The developer acknowledged the disappointment this news will cause, apologizing for the delayed announcement due to stakeholder compliance and regulatory requirements. They emphasized their commitment to delivering high-quality games and explained that despite progress in some areas, the overall player experience and interface didn't meet their standards, a conclusion supported by extensive internal testing and consumer feedback. Releasing a subpar game, or delaying it further into the football season, was deemed unacceptable.
All efforts are now focused on ensuring FM26 meets expectations. Further updates on FM26's development will be provided as they become available.
