Rockstar Games has officially announced a delay for *Grand Theft Auto VI*, now scheduled to launch on May 26, 2026—pushing its release window from the previously anticipated fall of 2025. The studio released a public statement acknowledging the change and expressing sincere gratitude for the ongoing support and patience from fans.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” Rockstar stated. “The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”
The developer reiterated its commitment to delivering a product that meets the high expectations of both players and the industry. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception,” the statement continued. “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
While the official confirmation of the *GTA 6* release date offers clarity, it came without any new gameplay footage or visuals, leaving fans still waiting for a follow-up to the debut trailer. Additionally, the absence of platform details in the announcement has sparked speculation about a potential PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
Earlier this year, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was cautiously optimistic when asked about the original 2025 release timeline, stating, “We feel really good about it.” Now, with the delay confirmed, Zelnick reaffirmed his full backing of Rockstar’s decision to extend development. “We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.”
In an investor note issued today, May 2, Zelnick added, “While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence. As we continue to release our phenomenal pipeline, we expect to deliver a multi-year period of growth in our business and enhanced value for our shareholders.”
The delay also reshapes the broader gaming calendar, offering other major titles more room to shine in late 2025. Titles like Gearbox’s *Borderlands 4*, EA’s *Battlefield*, Bungie’s *Marathon*, and Sony’s *Ghost of Yotei* may benefit from reduced competition. Nintendo, preparing for the launch of the Switch 2, could also see a strategic advantage.
However, not all developers will welcome the news. Those who fast-tracked releases to avoid being overshadowed by *GTA 6* in fall 2025 may now reassess their strategies. Likewise, studios planning launches around May 2026 might need to reconsider timing to avoid clashing with what is expected to be one of the most significant entertainment launches in history.
