When it comes to fast-and-furious rhythm games, the genre may not have taken off in the West as much as it did elsewhere, but there was one standout exception: Guitar Hero. The legendary franchise is set to make a comeback, and this time it's coming to mobile devices! However, the announcement didn't strike the right chord. Instead of a thrilling trailer or a detailed press release, Activision chose to unveil Guitar Hero Mobile with an AI-generated promotional image on Instagram. This move has overshadowed the excitement for the revival, especially since it follows another controversial use of AI art in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
As for what Guitar Hero Mobile will entail, details are scarce. Although the series did grace mobile platforms nearly two decades ago, fans are hoping for a more impressive return this time around. Unfortunately, the AI-generated art used in the announcement has been widely criticized for its poor quality, suggesting that it might not have been created using the latest image generators. This misstep could mean Guitar Hero Mobile is dead on arrival, particularly with strong competition from games like Space Ape's popular BeatStar.
While the idea of Guitar Hero returning to mobile excites me, and I see significant potential for it to thrive on this platform, Activision's use of AI art has undeniably struck a sour note. Despite the potential positives, the company has once again found itself in hot water.
