Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is in development and will directly connect with HBO's Harry Potter series (slated for 2026). The original game's phenomenal success—over 30 million copies sold—has cemented its place as a top performer.
David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, told Variety, "We've seen the fan demand for more, and we're actively working on it." He highlighted the collaboration with Warner Bros. Television to create a unified narrative, despite the game's 1800s setting preceding the series' timeline. The connection will focus on shared thematic elements and "big-picture storytelling."
While details on the HBO Max series remain limited, HBO & Max Content CEO Casey Bloys confirmed it will delve deeply into the beloved books. This presents a unique challenge: organically integrating the game's narrative without forced connections. The historical gap between the game and series presents an intriguing opportunity to reveal new Hogwarts lore.
Haddad notes Hogwarts Legacy reignited franchise interest: "The rest of the company was fascinated by what we unlocked with ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ last year."
Importantly, J.K. Rowling will have minimal direct involvement in franchise management, according to Variety. While Warner Bros. Discovery keeps her informed, Robert Oberschelp, head of global consumer products, stated, "For anything beyond established canon, we ensure collective agreement."
Rowling's past controversial statements led to a boycott of Hogwarts Legacy in 2023. While unsuccessful in hindering the game's sales, her limited involvement reassures fans that her views won't influence the game or series.
With the HBO series aiming for a 2026-2027 release, the Hogwarts Legacy sequel is unlikely to launch before then. Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Widenfels confirmed its high priority.
