inZOI's "Sort Of" Sex Feature: A Closer Look

The upcoming early access release of inZOI has sparked considerable curiosity, particularly regarding its handling of mature themes. In a recent "Ask Me (almost) Anything" session on the game's official Discord, three team leads addressed player questions, with answers translated by inZOI Assistant Director Joel Lee.

While questions covered various aspects of realism—baby care, body types, driving—the focus frequently returned to explicit content. Lee's responses, aiming for a safe-for-work approach, were somewhat ambiguous. Regarding a "sex feature," he stated: "Our answer is: sort of. There is a feature in the game that you obviously know what's happening...the male and female Zoi are together, likely in bed, with the intention of creating babies. How visually apparent is that? That's where you have to go to your imagination. What you're seeing is not what you're seeing; you have to assume that's what's happening."

This suggests a suggestive, rather than explicitly graphic, depiction of intimacy. The approach appears designed to balance realistic themes with broad accessibility, contrasting with the more cartoonish style of games like The Sims.

Why the Blurred Lines?

Players also inquired about Zois showering with towels. The developers explained that pixelated blurring, effective in cartoony games, proved problematic with inZOI's more realistic art style. The effect, instead of obscuring, felt more suggestive. Furthermore, a bug during testing temporarily revealed unblurred reflections, prompting a fix.

Despite the questions surrounding mature content, inZOI has received a T for Teen rating from the ESRB, similar to The Sims 4. This reflects the developers' goal of broad appeal. Lee emphasized, "We wanted to provide a game that was widely available to as many age groups as possible."
