What Should James Gunn's Second DCU Movie Be? We Have Ideas
Feb 28,2025Author: Aria
James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among other announcements, Gunn revealed he's actively scripting his next DCU directorial effort, following Superman. He's clearly very busy.
While Gunn remained tight-lipped about his next project (likely until after Superman's July release), several possibilities align well with his distinctive style. Which franchises and characters best suit his vision? Which films should be prioritized as Gunn and Peter Safran build this new shared universe? Here are some strong contenders for Gunn's next DCU movie.
Upcoming DC Universe Movies and TV Shows

Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Despite Batman's frequent big-screen appearances, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates significant buzz. This film will reboot Batman, introducing the DCU's Caped Crusader. Unlike recent iterations, it will spotlight the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian.
However, the film faces uncertainties. Progress seems slow, and Andy Muschietti's directorial involvement remains questionable. Introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's presents a significant challenge.
The DCU undeniably needs a Batman. His pivotal role demands a successful portrayal. If Muschietti departs, Gunn's involvement could ensure the project's success (a possibility already suggested). Gunn's expertise in crafting emotional father-son narratives (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) makes him ideally suited for the Bruce/Damian dynamic.
The Flash
The Flash is crucial to any DC Universe, a Justice League cornerstone and a multiverse linchpin. However, his live-action history is turbulent. The CW series showcased a successful ensemble approach (despite waning later), while Ezra Miller's DCEU portrayal faltered, resulting in a box-office failure.
The Flash needs a fresh start, avoiding overused storylines like Flashpoint. The film must prioritize Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), preventing Batman from overshadowing the lead.
Gunn's talent for dynamic action and character development (evident in the Guardians films) would significantly benefit a Flash movie. He could easily connect audiences with the character behind the red suit.
The Authority
Gunn acknowledged challenges in developing The Authority, citing difficulties in finding a unique angle that avoids overlap with The Boys and similar projects.
He stated, "Honestly, Authority's been the hardest, due to the shifting story and finding the right approach in a landscape already influenced by The Boys and similar works... It's currently on the back burner."
The Authority is vital to the expanding DCU. It was among the initial announced projects, and María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appears in Superman. The DCU will likely explore the contrast between optimistic heroes like Superman and the cynical Authority.
This film's success is crucial. Gunn's experience with misfit heroes and engaging team dynamics makes him a strong candidate to overcome the challenges.
Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie
Gunn admitted setbacks for the planned Waller series, stating, "It's had a few setbacks." This is understandable given his commitments to Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos. As his workload eases, prioritizing Waller, potentially as a feature film, might be beneficial.
Waller and ARGUS are the DCU's current connective tissue. ARGUS appears in Superman, and Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo) will be in Superman and Peacemaker: Season 2. Focusing on this element of the DC Universe and its central figure makes sense. If the series format proves problematic, a movie might be a better approach.
Batman & Superman: World's Finest
Batman v Superman (2016), despite its box office success, fell short of expectations. The dark tone alienated some viewers.
The film lacked the desired camaraderie between Batman and Superman. A team-up showcasing their friendship and collaborative efforts against larger threats would resonate better. Gunn's style is well-suited for this type of crossover.
Instead of solely focusing on The Brave and the Bold, Gunn could unite his Superman with the new Batman in a single film. The DCU needs reliable hits, and a Gunn-directed Batman/Superman film is a strong contender.
Titans
The Teen Titans boast a significant fanbase, stemming from successful comics and animated series. While Max's Titans series had flaws, it demonstrated the characters' live-action potential.
A live-action Titans film is arguably more appealing than a new Justice League film. The Titans' dysfunctional family dynamic distinguishes them from the League. Gunn's success with the Guardians suggests he could effectively portray the Titans' unique dynamic.
Justice League Dark
The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase, featuring Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos, indicates a supernatural focus. Establishing a supernatural Justice League counterpart is logical.
Justice League Dark offers opportunities for magical heroes like Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine. Their inherent dysfunction aligns perfectly with Gunn's storytelling strengths. Including a character like Batman or Wonder Woman could attract a wider audience.
