Keanu Reeves has delivered the most encouraging update yet on Constantine 2, confirming that a script is now in the works. John Constantine, the occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, was memorably portrayed by Reeves in the 2005 film adaptation, a cult classic that followed his success with The Matrix. For two decades, fans have clamored for a sequel, a desire Reeves has openly shared.
Now, Constantine 2 appears closer to reality than ever before, following Reeves' confirmation of a recent pitch meeting at DC Studios. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’" Reeves told Inverse. "So, we're going to try and write a script."
This is positive news, but it's crucial to remember that a green light from DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran is not guaranteed. Constantine 2 remains unconfirmed within the rebooted DCU, and neither Gunn nor Safran has publicly acknowledged the project. Its future remains uncertain.
However, Reeves hinted that, if produced, Constantine 2 will remain within the same universe as the original film. "We're not going off that," he assured fans, adding with a touch of humor, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."
Reeves' comments follow those of producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who stated in September that a Constantine 2 script existed but he was hesitant to read it. Speaking to ComicBook, di Bonaventura revealed, "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough. I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
