Following its release late last year, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has reportedly achieved significant sales success, surpassing 200,000 units sold. Despite some initial technical issues and accusations of censorship, the game has attracted a robust fan base eager to revisit the classic action title.
Developed originally by Grasshopper Manufacture, renowned for its unique action games like the No More Heroes series, Lollipop Chainsaw is a hack-and-slash game featuring a cheerleader, Juliet Starling, who battles zombies with a chainsaw. The remaster, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, was handled by Dragami Games, who enhanced the game with quality-of-life improvements and a significant visual upgrade.
Several months after its launch in September 2024, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has sold over 200,000 copies across all available platforms, including current and last-gen systems as well as PC. This milestone was announced by Dragami Games via a tweet, celebrating the game's sales success.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Developers Celebrate The Game's Sales Success
The narrative of Lollipop Chainsaw centers on Juliet Starling, a cheerleader at San Romero High School, who discovers her heritage as a zombie hunter when her school is overrun by the undead. Players engage in intense combat with hordes of zombies and unique bosses, wielding Juliet's signature chainsaw in a style reminiscent of games like Bayonetta and other classic third-person action titles.
The original Lollipop Chainsaw, released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, achieved even greater success, reportedly selling over a million copies. Its appeal was bolstered by the collaboration between iconic game designer Goichi Suda and James Gunn, the filmmaker behind Guardians of the Galaxy, who contributed to the game's story and writing.
As of now, there is no confirmation on whether the sales success of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will lead to additional content or a sequel. However, the game's performance is a promising sign for remasters of niche titles. Another title from Grasshopper Manufacture, Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, has also been updated and released across current platforms, bringing the action-horror game to new audiences and hardware.
