Surprisingly, some players remain unaware of the shield's existence. Its addition was a later development in Minecraft, but crafting one is straightforward:
- Gather 6 wooden planks (easily crafted from logs).
- Obtain 1 iron ingot (smelted from iron ore).
- Arrange the planks in a "Y" shape in the crafting grid, placing the iron ingot in the top-center slot.

Locating a Pre-made Shield
While crafting is an option, shields can also be found in-game. Ironically, you'll likely need to battle pillagers (without a shield!) to acquire one. The advantage here is the potential to obtain a banner to customize your shield.
Why You Need a Shield
In combat, a shield acts as a second skin. Timely use blocks nearly 100% of arrow and melee damage. Holding down the right mouse button activates the shield's protection. Imagine deflecting a volley of skeleton arrows with ease!
