For fans eagerly awaiting news of a potential The Last of Us Part 3 video game, series creator Neil Druckmann has delivered a sobering update. In a recent interview, he cast significant doubt on the likelihood of a third installment ever being developed.
In a detailed discussion with Variety, primarily focused on The Last of Us TV series, Druckmann addressed the possibility of a Part 3 at the interview’s close. His response was notably definitive:
“I anticipated this question,” he said with a sigh. “All I’ll say is, don’t expect more of The Last of Us. This might be the end.”
Whether Druckmann’s statement is entirely candid remains open to interpretation. Naughty Dog is currently focused on Intergalactic, a project unveiled at The Game Awards last December, which is likely years from release given the absence of a launch timeline. With the studio’s attention on this new venture, a return to The Last of Us seems improbable in the near term. Druckmann’s words could be a strategic deflection, a reflection of indecision, or a genuine indication that the series is complete. Only time will tell.
For those still yearning for more of The Last of Us, the TV series offers solace, with its second season set to premiere on April 13 on Max. While Druckmann remains uncertain about the number of seasons needed to adapt Part 2’s story, an HBO executive suggested in February that four seasons might be the ideal scope.
