NieR Automata - How To Unlock & Use Chapter Select

Quick Links

NieR: Automata allows extensive exploration and side-quest completion between main story missions. Much of the game's content might seem missable on a first playthrough. Even after seeing the credits, the game is far from over. Completing the game unlocks the ability to revisit earlier content within the same save file. Here's how to unlock and utilize Chapter Select.

This section contains minor spoilers regarding achieving the true ending.

How To Unlock Chapter Select In NieR: Automata

Unlocking Chapter Select requires completing one of the game's true endings. This involves three playthroughs, culminating in a final choice during the third playthrough's ending sequence. While referred to as playthroughs, many consider them individual chapters, each contributing to the overarching narrative.

After viewing the credits of a playthrough, save your game. Loading that save initiates the next section, featuring a different character. The final playthrough involves multiple character shifts; its completion unlocks Chapter Select for that save file.

How Chapter Select Functions In NieR: Automata

Access Chapter Select from two locations:

  • The main menu of the save file upon loading.
  • Any access point within the game world.

This menu lets you select any game chapter to load, retaining all aspects of your profile: weapons, level, and items. When loading a chapter with multiple playable characters, you can choose which character to control.

Note that completed side quests cannot be replayed, regardless of the chosen chapter. If switching chapters mid-playthrough, always save at an access point. Failing to do so results in the loss of any progress (levels, items) made in the current chapter. Chapter Select is invaluable for completing all content and exploring alternative choices to obtain every ending.
