Obtaining Filler Metal in NieR: Automata
Finding upgrade materials in NieR: Automata can be challenging. Many drop from enemies, but some, like Filler Metal, appear randomly in the environment. This means farming them involves an element of chance.
Locating Filler Metal:
Early in the game, Filler Metal is a rare drop found in specific locations deep within the Factory. Its spawn point varies each playthrough, and it has a low drop rate compared to other items. After progressing through the main story, accessing the Factory: Hanger fast travel point is recommended as a starting point for searching. Note that you might need to unlock this access point again depending on your story progress.
While increased movement speed helps, reliably farming Filler Metal is impossible. The most efficient approach is to thoroughly explore the Factory, collecting all randomly spawned items.
Purchasing Filler Metal:
A more reliable (though expensive) method is to buy Filler Metal. It's only available from the Shopkeeper Machine in the Amusement Park after completing all three playthroughs and obtaining a final ending. Using Chapter Select to revisit the Shopkeeper will reveal Filler Metal in its inventory, priced at 11,250 G each.
This high cost is offset by its reliability compared to Factory farming. The Pod upgrades requiring Filler Metal are crucial for progressing, as enemies scale in difficulty.
