Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
New circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could have a surprising additional function: computer mouse emulation. While the practicality of this feature for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has already fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles," typically found on the bottom of computer mice, and intended for "game console handles." Two model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The tape's reported 90 x 90mm size suggests it's large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While novel for Nintendo, mouse functionality in handheld controllers isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transforming into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic slider for improved surface interaction.
The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for attaching controllers—another rumored Switch 2 feature. This similarity further supports the plausibility of the mouse-like Joy-Con functionality.
