Nintendo has officially confirmed that the live-action *The Legend of Zelda* movie is set to premiere on March 26, 2027. This exciting update was revealed through the newly launched Nintendo Today! app, which made its debut during the Nintendo Direct in March 2025. Interestingly, no other details about the film were shared alongside this release date announcement.
The news was revealed by Shigeru Miyamoto as a surprise element at the end of the Nintendo Direct presentation—an unexpected tease that highlighted the new app’s role in delivering timely updates directly to fans. Designed as a one-stop destination for Nintendo enthusiasts, the Nintendo Today! app offers a unique blend of daily news and personalized content tailored for users.
The app functions as both a news aggregator and an interactive calendar, allowing players to stay up-to-date with the latest announcements as they happen. As Miyamoto explained, after events like the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, users can turn to the Nintendo Today! app to access all the key highlights and receive ongoing updates “daily.”
This early reveal of the *Zelda* movie release date demonstrates the app's potential to deliver major news ahead of traditional channels. It’s worth noting that the Nintendo Today! app broke the *Zelda* movie news before any official social media posts were made, signaling its importance as a primary source for future reveals.
The collaboration between Nintendo and Sony Pictures for a live-action *Legend of Zelda* film was first announced back in November 2023. Under the direction of Wes Ball—known for *The Maze Runner* series and *Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes*—the film will be produced by Avi Arad and Nintendo’s own Shigeru Miyamoto.
Despite the growing anticipation, very little is known about the plot or casting details so far. However, director Wes Ball has offered some intriguing hints, expressing his desire for the film to embody a “live action Miyazaki” aesthetic. The reference to Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary filmmaker behind Studio Ghibli classics such as *Spirited Away* and *Howl's Moving Castle*, suggests a visually rich and imaginative approach to the beloved franchise.
Ball has also emphasized that the film will be a serious and grounded adaptation, avoiding heavy reliance on motion capture technology. His goal is to create a realistic portrayal of the *Zelda* universe—one that resonates deeply with longtime fans while also appealing to a broader audience.
