Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been raving about its stunning card art for months, but a recent discovery has taken their excitement to new heights. Many players are just now noticing that some of the cards contain hidden details that link them directly to the beloved Game Boy games.
The intrigue started over the weekend when Reddit user asch_win pointed out that the Spearow card features specific landmarks. This Normal/Flying type Pokémon is depicted in a scene with grass, a fence, trees, and two notable buildings. As asch_win clarified, the purple and yellow building in the background is none other than the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Just to the left of Celadon City lies Route 16, where players can encounter Spearow in the game's fenced-in grassy area.

It's clear that developers Creatures Inc. and DeNA have intentionally crafted these cards to pay homage to the iconic games that propelled Pokémon into a global phenomenon. But the Easter eggs don't stop at Spearow. Reddit user jteede uncovered additional connections, such as a full-art Diglett card located east of Vermillion City and a Haunter card near the Lavender Town tower. Asch_win even used a magnifying glass to reveal that some Supporter cards also reference specific locations from Pokémon's rich history.

While most card illustrations depict Pokémon in dreamlike environments, seemingly detached from the series' lore, some cards, like a certain Pikachu variant, are recognizable as collectibles from the real world. Others are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket, where these hidden gems are being discovered.
The Pokémon TCG Pocket community has spent the weekend meticulously examining other cards for more references. Notable finds include the S.S. Anne cruise liner subtly placed in a Gyarados full art card, and a trio of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that together weave a story set near the seaside Snorlax location from FireRed and LeafGreen.
Since its launch for mobile gaming fans in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has seen the release of just one additional booster expansion set, Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs. More expansions are expected to be released in the future, with additional cards being introduced through Wonder Pick Events and other updates. As Creatures and DeNA continue to expand the card collection across multiple generations, players should keep their eyes peeled for more hidden references.
In the meantime, you can learn more about the current Wonder Pick event, featuring Charmander and Squirtle. Also, don't miss out on why the developers are playing coy about whether pack choice matters or not.
