Pokémon TCG Pocket announces major trading system overhaul

Revolutionary Changes Coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket's Trading

After months of player frustration, Pokémon TCG Pocket developers have unveiled significant improvements to the game's much-criticized trading mechanic. While the proposed changes appear promising, players face a lengthy wait before implementation - likely until fall 2024.

Sweeping Currency Changes

According to official forum posts, the controversial Trade Token system will be completely scrapped. These unpopular tokens currently require players to sacrifice valuable cards just to access basic trading functions. Instead, trades will utilize Shinedust, an existing currency players already accumulate through pack openings and events.

The new system introduces interesting changes:

  • Trade Tokens will convert to Shinedust when removed
  • No changes for trading common (1-2 diamond) rarity cards
  • Higher rarity trades (3-4 diamond and 1-star) will require Shinedust
  • Developers promise increased Shinedust rewards to compensate

Why These Changes Matter

The current system forces players to destroy multiple rare cards just to trade one - a punishing requirement that's smothered community trading activity. Under the new rules, accumulating trade currency will happen naturally through regular gameplay rather than painful card sacrifices.

"Imagine having to bin five rare cards just to trade one - that's the headache players currently face."

Upcoming Quality-of-Life Improvements

Perhaps the most exciting addition is a new feature allowing players to indicate which cards they want in trades. Currently, the system operates like a blind auction where traders must guess what others might accept - a major pain point the community has repeatedly highlighted.

The Trade-Offs

While universally welcomed, these changes come with notable caveats:

  1. Players who already sacrificed rare cards for tokens receive no compensation beyond conversion
  2. The lengthy implementation timeline means months more of the current broken system
  3. Trading activity may completely stall as players await the update

The developers acknowledge the need for some trade cost to prevent exploitation (like creating dummy accounts to farm cards), but promise the new Shinedust system will be far more player-friendly than the current sacrificial requirements.

For now, veteran players advise hoarding Shinedust and avoiding unnecessary trades until the update arrives. Several expansion sets may come and go before Pokémon TCG Pocket's trading finally functions as intended.
