PS5 Pro's Poor Reception Does Nothing to Slow Sales ProjectionsRecent PS5 Pro sales projections remain strong despite mixed initial reception. Analysts offer insights into its anticipated market performance, while the console's features fuel speculation about a potential new handheld device.

Analyst Perspective on PS5 Pro Sales and Pricing

PS5 Pro's Enhanced Capabilities Spark Handheld Console Rumors

PS5 Pro's Poor Reception Does Nothing to Slow Sales ProjectionsThe $700 PS5 Pro's projected sales are comparable to the PS4 Pro, according to Ampere Analysis, despite the significant price increase. Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls notes a much larger price gap between the PS5 and PS5 Pro (40-50%) than between the PS4 and PS4 Pro at launch.

Ampere forecasts approximately 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during its November 2024 launch window – around 400,000 fewer than the PS4 Pro's initial sales. Harding-Rolls highlights the price difference between the PS4 Pro ($399) and the slim PS4 ($299) at launch (33%), contrasting it with the PS5 and PS5 Pro pricing. While acknowledging the PS5 Pro's price might dampen demand, he believes PlayStation enthusiasts will be less price-sensitive. Sony sold approximately 14.5 million PS4 Pro units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with an estimated 13 million units sold over five years. Sell-through, in this context, refers to direct consumer purchases from retailers.

PS5 Pro's Poor Reception Does Nothing to Slow Sales ProjectionsPS5 lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS5 Pro will enhance PSVR2 gaming through performance improvements. He told CNET that the upgraded GPU will allow for higher-resolution PSVR2 game outputs, although specific titles haven't been announced. Cerny also mentioned the PS5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (AI-assisted upscaling) will be compatible with PSVR2. The PS5 Pro also supports other PS5 accessories like the PS Portal.

The PS5 Pro's compatibility with the PS Portal has fueled speculation about a potential new portable PlayStation console. Earlier rumors of a PS5 handheld capable of running PS5 games have resurfaced, though nothing is confirmed. The PS5 Pro's advanced capabilities could indeed pave the way for a new handheld device.
