Levy has been developing this movie since 2022, and the script has been in the works since last year. He's teaming up again with Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both directed by Levy.
While details about the plot are tightly under wraps, it's known that the story will be a standalone movie, separate from the iconic Skywalker Saga. There's no information yet on the specific era or the character Ryan Gosling might portray, but the involvement of such a high-profile actor has accelerated the project's timeline. Originally, Levy was slated to direct a boy band movie with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, if Gosling officially signs on, the Star Wars film will leapfrog to become Levy's next project, with production expected to start in the fall.
Star Wars is currently navigating a period of transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney Plus launched its latest series, Skeleton Crew, which recently concluded its run. On the film front, Dave Filoni's The Mandalorian and Grogu wrapped production in December and is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
