Heroes of Newerth: A Potential Resurrection?
Following its 2022 shutdown, the classic MOBA Heroes of Newerth is sparking comeback rumors. Recent activity on the game's long-dormant social media accounts has ignited fan speculation. The developer's renewed online presence, after a three-year hiatus, hints at a possible announcement.
The MOBA genre exploded after the success of Dota, a Warcraft 3 mod. The core gameplay—two teams battling to destroy each other's base—quickly gained popularity. League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth emerged as leading titles in the late 2000s and early 2010s. While Heroes of Newerth ultimately ceased operations, recent developments suggest a possible return.
Personally, I favor the top/off-lane bruiser role in MOBAs, similar to Aatrox or Mordekaiser in League of Legends, or Axe, Sven, and Tidehunter in Dota 2. If that role is unavailable, I'm adaptable, though I prefer ranged carry over mid or support.
The first clue appeared as a social media post. The official Twitter account, silent since its December 2021 shutdown announcement, recently posted a "Happy NEW Year" message (note the capitalized "NEW"). Coupled with subtle website updates—a silhouetted logo and animated particles—the message fueled speculation.
The Developer's Social Media Signals a Possible Return
This wasn't a one-off event. A subsequent January 6th post—an image of a cracking egg—further intensified excitement. Fan theories range from HoN hero integration into Dota 2 to the release of a mobile version.
The renewed social media engagement demonstrates the enduring appeal of Heroes of Newerth. While the developer's plans remain unclear, the potential return of this classic MOBA promises an intriguing challenge to existing top-tier titles.
