1047 Games, the creators of the popular arena shooter, is thrilled to announce the sequel to their 2019 hit: Splitgate 2! This article delves into the exciting features awaiting players in the Sol Splitgate League.
Splitgate 2: A 2025 Launch
Familiar Foundations, Fresh Experience
On July 18th, 1047 Games unveiled a stunning cinematic trailer for Splitgate 2. The free-to-play shooter, initially released in 2019, is set for a significant upgrade.
CEO Ian Proulx stated their primary objective: "to build a game that can last a decade or more." While the original drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the team recognized the need for evolution. "To create a lasting modern game, we needed to develop tools for a deeply satisfying gameplay loop," Proulx explained.
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, elaborated on the game's design philosophy: "We re-evaluated our approach to portals, aiming to create a system where skilled players could truly excel, but without making portal usage mandatory for success."
While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, 1047 Games confirmed Splitgate 2 will utilize Unreal Engine 5, retain its free-to-play model, and introduce a compelling faction system. Despite familiar elements, the developers assure players that "Splitgate 2 will look and feel entirely fresh compared to the original."
The game's 2025 release is confirmed for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Often described as a fusion of Halo and Portal, Splitgate is a PvP arena shooter where players strategically utilize wormholes to navigate maps. The original game's meteoric rise to popularity, fueled by a demo that garnered 600,000 downloads in a single month, is testament to its appeal. The game's initial success even necessitated server upgrades to handle the massive player base.
Following an extended early access period, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. The studio then announced the cessation of updates for the original game to focus on "building the game fans deserve," hinting at "revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes."
New Characters, Maps, and Faction Warfare
The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three distinct factions, promising "enhanced gameplay depth."
According to the Steam page, each faction offers a unique playstyle. Players can choose Aeros for swift battlefield movement, Meridian for tactical time manipulation, or Sabrask for aggressive, high-powered combat.
While the exact impact of these factions remains to be seen, the developers clarified that Splitgate 2 will not adopt a hero shooter model like Overwatch or Valorant.
Fans eager for gameplay footage will have to wait until Gamescom 2024 (August 21st-25th), but the trailer has already generated significant excitement.
While many gameplay details are currently confidential, the developers assured fans that the trailer accurately reflects the Splitgate 2 experience. They confirmed the authenticity of the maps, weapons, portal effects, and even the return of dual-wielding.
Dive into the Lore with Splitgate 2 Comics
Confirming the absence of a single-player campaign, 1047 Games revealed a mobile companion app. This app will allow players to explore the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
