Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link

Jun 28,2025 Author: Christopher

Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, the mobile ARPG spin-off that was intended to expand the beloved franchise through GPS-based gameplay and augmented reality elements. Initially revealed with much fanfare, Missing-Link was designed as a previously unseen chapter in the overarching Kingdom Hearts saga, bridging story gaps while offering players a unique, location-based gaming experience.

The game was set to immerse players in the role of a keyblade wielder, battling waves of Heartless across various global locations using GPS integration. While details on how this mechanic would fully function remained vague, the ambitious concept aimed to bring a fresh layer of interactivity to the franchise—something rarely seen in mobile RPGs.

However, after multiple delays—including setbacks to its Android closed beta—it’s now clear that Square Enix has chosen to refocus its efforts entirely on the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts IV. The decision suggests that internal development teams found the core mechanics of Missing-Link challenging to implement effectively, or perhaps not aligned with the future direction of the series.

This isn't the first time Square Enix has pulled the plug on a mobile project, making such cancellations almost expected by fans. Although Japan often welcomes new mobile titles warmly, reaching an international audience can be difficult—even for a globally recognized brand like Kingdom Hearts. In this case, it seems creative and technical hurdles led to the decision to abandon Missing-Link in favor of prioritizing the next major entry in the main series.

For fans still eager to dive into a rich RPG experience in the meantime, there's no shortage of high-quality mobile RPGs available on iOS and Android. From epic fantasy adventures to dark, narrative-driven worlds, there's plenty to explore while we wait for the next big chapter in the Kingdom Hearts universe.
