Stardew Valley: How To Befriend The Dwarf

Mar 21,2025 Author: Thomas

Aside from Krobus, the Dwarf is one of Stardew Valley's most enigmatic characters. He resides alone in the mines, a solitary figure unlike any other villager. His origins remain shrouded in mystery, and the game currently offers limited insight into his life.

Despite this, you can still befriend this peculiar creature. It's a unique challenge, requiring you to learn a new language, and the rewards aren't the same as befriending other villagers. However, it adds a touch of fantasy and intrigue to your Stardew Valley experience.

Updated January 8, 2024 by Demaris Oxman: Recent Stardew Valley updates have refined how players build friendships. Update 1.5 introduced the Movie Theater, offering new social interaction opportunities, while 1.6 adjusted gift preferences. This updated guide helps you befriend the Dwarf.

Meeting The Dwarf

In the mines, to the right of the entrance on the first floor, you'll find a large boulder. Break it with a copper pickaxe or better, or use a bomb. A short distance to the right reveals the Dwarf in his shop.

Learn To Speak Dwarvish

The Dwarf doesn't speak common tongue. Gifts have no initial effect on your friendship. To communicate, collect all four Dwarf Scrolls (artifacts). Donate them to the Museum; Gunther will reward you with a Dwarvish translation guide. Return to the mines and converse with the Dwarf. You can now understand him and buy from his shop.

Gift Guide

Gifts are key to befriending the Dwarf. You can give up to two gifts weekly. Remember, his birthday is Summer 22; gifts on this day grant eight times the friendship points.

Loved Gifts (+80 Friendship Points)

These are the best gifts, easily found in the mines:

  • Gemstones: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Jade, Ruby, Topaz, Emerald
  • Lemon Stone
  • Omni Geode
  • Lava Eel
  • All universally loved gifts

Liked Gifts (+45 Friendship Points)

Most are also found in the mines:

  • All universally liked gifts
  • All Artifacts
  • Cave Carrot
  • Quartz

Disliked & Hated Gifts (-Friendship Points)

Avoid these gifts entirely:

  • Mushrooms and other foraged items
  • All universally hated gifts (except Artifacts)

Movie Theater Preferences

Once the Movie Theater is open, invite the Dwarf. He loves all movies but is picky about snacks. He loves Stardrop Sorbet and Rock Candy; he likes Cotton Candy, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jawbreaker, Salmon Burger, Sour Slimes, and Star Cookie. Other snacks are disliked.
