Steam Deck Game Reviews & Impressions

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck Review

Despite the yearly release cycle skepticism, NBA 2K25 stands out. It's the first PC version since the PS5 launch to offer the true "Next Gen" experience, mirroring the consoles. Officially confirmed as optimized for Steam Deck (though not yet officially rated by Valve), it delivers a satisfying, if not perfect, portable basketball experience.

Key improvements for PC players include ProPLAY technology (previously PS5/Xbox Series X exclusive) and the WNBA debut alongside MyNBA mode. If you've held off on recent PC versions, this is the one to get. The 16:10 and 800p support, alongside AMD FSR 2, DLSS, and XeSS (though I disabled these for clarity), are welcome additions. Extensive graphics settings allow for customization, though I found capping the framerate at 60fps provided the best balance of performance and visual quality. The default Steam Deck preset felt overly blurry.

Offline play is limited; MyCAREER and MyTEAM require online access, but Quick Play and Eras modes work offline. Load times, while improved, are slower than on PS5/Xbox Series X. Cross-play with consoles is absent. The persistent microtransaction issue remains a concern, impacting certain game modes.

Despite technical limitations compared to consoles, the portability factor makes NBA 2K25 a frequent choice on my Steam Deck.

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck review score: 4/5

Gimmick! 2 Steam Deck Impressions

Unverified by Valve but running flawlessly, Gimmick! 2 benefits from recent Steam Deck/Linux fixes. Capped at 60fps (forcing 60hz on OLED screens is recommended), it boasts native 16:10 menu support (gameplay remains 16:9). The lack of graphical options isn't a drawback, and a Steam Deck Verified rating seems imminent.

Arco Steam Deck Mini Review

Arco, a dynamic turn-based RPG, shines with its updated Steam version (superior to the Switch version). The combat system, audio, and story are highlights. Steam Deck Verified, it runs smoothly at 60fps (16:9 only), and includes an assist mode for those wanting to streamline gameplay.

A fantastic tactical RPG with a memorable narrative.

Arco Steam Deck review score: 5/5

Skull and Bones Steam Deck Mini Review

Recently added to Steam, Skull and Bones is playable on Steam Deck (Valve rating: Playable). The initial Ubisoft Connect login process is clunky. For optimal performance, I recommend a 30fps cap at 16:10 and 800p with FSR 2 quality upscaling. While still early in my playthrough, the game shows potential, especially with recent updates. It's an online-only experience.

Recommendation: Try the free trial.

ODDADA Steam Deck Review

ODDADA, a music-making experience, runs perfectly at 90fps with touch controls (no controller support yet). Minimal settings adjustments are needed. Menu text is small. Despite the lack of controller support, it's a highly enjoyable creative tool.

ODDADA Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5

Star Trucker Steam Deck Mini Review

Star Trucker blends automobile simulation and space exploration. While not deeply engaging in either genre, it creates a unique experience. It runs on Proton Experimental with customizable graphics settings (16:10 support included). Controls require adjustment.

A surprising and enjoyable game, though optimization could be improved.

Star Trucker Steam Deck review score: 4/5

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Mini Review

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia, a visual novel, runs perfectly on Steam Deck. It features 720p at 16:9, and cutscenes play without issue. Check system settings to ensure correct button configuration. A great follow-up to Rio Reincarnation.

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Review Score: 4/5

Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES Steam Deck Review Impressions

Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES, a significantly enhanced version of the original, is playable on Steam Deck but lacks controller support (trackpad/touch controls are used). Initial impressions are positive.

Pinball FX Steam Deck Impressions

Pinball FX offers a robust PC port with HDR support on Steam Deck. The gameplay is enjoyable, and the free-to-play version allows for sampling before DLC purchases.

New Steam Deck Verified & Playable Games

Notable additions include Hookah Haze and OneShot: World Machine Edition (Verified). Black Myth: Wukong remains Unsupported, despite playable performance.

Steam Deck Game Sales

Check out the Games from Croatia sale for discounts on Talos Principle and more.

That concludes this week's Steam Deck Weekly. Feedback is welcome!
