Fade Slash
A backward slashing attack; direction controlled via the analog stick.
R2/RT + Circle/B (During Combo)
Foresight Slash
A mid-combo attack with significant invulnerability. Consumes the entire Spirit Gauge, but landing it after a dodge refills it. Chain into a Spirit Roundslash with R2/RT; a red gauge allows a Foresight Whirl Slash follow-up.
R2/RT + Triangle/Y
Spirit Thrust
Lowers the Spirit Gauge (White or higher) but chains into Spirit Helm Breaker. A red gauge allows a Spirit Release Slash follow-up. Cancel Spirit Helm Breaker with Square/X.
R2/RT + Cross/A
Special Sheath
A special sheathing action.
After Special Sheath, Triangle/Y
Iai Slash
Automatically fills the Spirit Gauge briefly after Special Sheath.
After Special Sheath, R2/RT
Iai Spirit Slash
Counterattack after Special Sheath; raises the Spirit Gauge level.
L2/LT + R1/RB
Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust
Effective against wounds; hitting a wound/weak point unleashes a slash and increases the Spirit Gauge. Adjust direction with the analog stick.
The Spirit Gauge
The Spirit Gauge is the Long Sword's unique mechanic, boosting its damage potential. Higher levels mean greater damage, unlocking powerful follow-up attacks at maximum level.
Attacks on the monster charge the gauge. Use Spirit Blade attacks and land the Spirit Roundslash or a Focus Strike to increase levels. A red gauge's duration decreases over time; landing a Spirit Roundslash or Spinning Crimson Slash extends it.
Damage Increases: White – 1.02x, Yellow – 1.04x, Red – 1.1x

Spirit Gauge Filling/Leveling Combo
A four-hit Triangle/Y (Overhead Slash) combo rapidly fills the Spirit Gauge, enabling Spirit Blade attacks to increase its level. Similarly, a four-hit R2/RT combo, landing the final Spirit Roundslash, raises the gauge.
Crimson Slash Combo
With a maxed (red) Spirit Gauge, basic Triangle/Y attacks become Crimson Slashes. A three-hit Crimson Slash combo delivers swift, high damage.
Stationary Combo
With a maxed Spirit Gauge, use Triangle/Y + Circle/B + Triangle/Y (Crimson Slash + Rising Slash + Crimson Slash) to deal damage while remaining stationary.

Spirit Charge
Holding R2/RT performs a Spirit Charge; a full charge unleashes a Spirit Roundslash and instantly boosts the Spirit Gauge. Charge in safety.
Spirit Helm Breaker/Spirit Release Slash
Spirit Helm Breaker deals maximum damage, consuming the current Spirit Gauge level. Maximize Crimson Slashes before using it. After a Spirit Thrust and Spirit Helm Breaker, use R2/RT for the high-damage, high-speed Spirit Release Slash.
Free Spirit Gauge Levels
Focus Strike on wounds grants one Spirit Gauge level per wound. Multiple wounds allow instant red gauge status. Even with one wound, follow a Focus Strike with a Spirit Blade combo ending in a Spirit Blade Roundhouse for an immediate level increase.
Countering with Iai Spirit Slash
Use Special Sheath (R2/RT + Cross/A) after an attack, then time Iai Spirit Slash (R2/RT) with an enemy attack to counter and gain a Spirit Gauge level.
Master these techniques, and you'll dominate Monster Hunter Wilds with the Long Sword. Explore The Escapist for more game guides.
