Sony's policy requiring PlayStation Network (PSN) tethering for even single-player PC games has angered many gamers. This restriction, coupled with PSN's regional limitations, significantly impacts the availability of modern Sony game releases on PC.
Recently, Sony announced some policy adjustments. While they haven't completely abandoned PSN tethering for PC games, they have introduced some relaxations. These changes will eliminate the mandatory PSN connection for the following titles:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players who still choose to tether to PSN will receive in-game bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest early in the game, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points to unlock features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the backlash against PSN connection requirements. He stated that it's crucial for security and order, framing it within the context of service-based games. However, he failed to explain how this requirement enhances security for single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
Times have changed, and this policy continues to be a point of contention.
