In a surprising turn of events, former Oscars host Conan O’Brien revealed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ surprising rigidity regarding their iconic statue. O’Brien, during an episode of Mike Sweeney’s podcast, "Conan Needs a Friend," shared how his team’s creative promotional ideas were shot down due to the Academy’s strict rules surrounding the Oscar statuette.
O’Brien pitched a series of ads depicting a humorous domestic partnership between himself and a nine-foot-tall Oscar statue. However, the Academy balked at his vision, rejecting even seemingly harmless concepts.

"At one point, I thought, wouldn’t it be great if it’s just on the couch? Let’s lay it on a really big couch and I’ll be vacuuming and say, ‘Could you at least lift your feet? Or could you at least get up and help? Load the dishwasher?’ We wanted to do it and they just said, ‘No, no no, that can’t happen.’"
The Academy's staunch refusal to allow even a seemingly innocuous horizontal placement of the statue surprised O'Brien. He explained that an Academy representative stated, "Oscar can never be horizontal," likening the statue's perceived status to a "religious icon."
Further adding to the absurdity, the Academy also insisted the statue remain "always naked," thus nixing another idea where the statue, clad in an apron, served O’Brien leftovers. While the reasoning behind these rules remains unclear, the Academy's firm stance prevented O'Brien from showcasing his comedic vision to the fullest extent.

While the Academy's decisions may seem arbitrary, they are ultimately within their right. However, it's unfortunate that viewers missed out on O’Brien's potentially hilarious promotional concepts. Here’s hoping for a return of Conan as Oscars host in 2026, bringing with him even more creative – and hopefully, Academy-approved – ideas.
