Russian Checkers (8x8): Rules

Movement and Capture:

  • White moves first.
  • Movement is restricted to dark squares.
  • Mandatory capture if possible.
  • Forward and backward captures allowed.
  • Kings move and capture diagonally to any square.
  • Turkish strike rule applies (only one opponent piece can be captured per move).
  • Multiple capture options allow for any choice (not necessarily the longest).
  • Checkers reaching the opponent's edge become kings and can immediately utilize king moves if applicable.

Draw Conditions:

  • A player with three (or more) kings and checkers at the game's end, against a single opponent king, cannot fail to capture the opponent's king on their 15th move (from when force balance is established).
  • In king-only positions, if the force balance remains unchanged (no captures or king promotions) for: 30 moves in 4-5 piece endings; 60 moves in 6-7 piece endings.
  • With three checkers (kings or regular) against a single opponent king on the "high road", failure to capture within 5 moves constitutes a draw.
  • 15 consecutive moves using only kings, without moving regular checkers or capturing.
  • Three (or more) repetitions of the same board position with the same player's turn.

International Checkers (10x10): Rules

Movement and Capture:

  • White moves first.
  • Movement is restricted to dark squares.
  • Mandatory capture if possible.
  • Forward and backward captures allowed.
  • Kings move and capture diagonally to any square.
  • Turkish strike rule applies (only one opponent piece can be captured per move).
  • Majority rule applies (capture the maximum number of pieces).
  • A simple checker capturing and reaching the opponent's edge continues capturing as a regular checker (no king promotion until the capture sequence ends).
  • A simple checker reaching the opponent's edge by a move (or capture) becomes a king and stops; king moves are applied on the next turn.
