Esquie, the oldest and strongest being in the world, adds depth to the game by facilitating exploration. Although not a frontline combatant, Esquie provides access to various locations on the open world map, requiring the team to collect special stones to unlock new abilities and explore previously unreachable areas.

The other playable characters, Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso, were previously revealed on October 16, 2024, in a YouTube video. Despite their diverse personalities and motivations, they unite to break the cycle of death caused by the Paintress.

Sandfall Interactive aims to revolutionize the classic turn-based RPG combat system with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. According to an Xbox Wire article dated January 23, 2025, the game introduces a "reactive turn-based system," blending real-time elements into traditional turn-based combat. This system allows players to dodge enemy attacks or execute powerful parries, enhancing the combat experience. Guillaume Broche, CEO and creative director, emphasized the game's depth, stating, "We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face... Every character has their own playstyle and you can really play them in a lot of different ways."

With these features, players can explore hundreds of different builds, tailoring their playstyle to their preferences while navigating the challenges of the reactive turn-based system.
