Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nearing Completion, but Release Still Distant

Deltarune Chapter 4 Progress

Undertale creator Toby Fox recently shared a development update for Deltarune in his newsletter, offering insights into the progress of Chapters 3 and 4.

While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, with all maps finished and battles playable, a release date remains elusive. Fox highlighted remaining tasks such as polishing cutscenes, balancing battles, enhancing visuals, and improving background details. Despite this, he considers Chapter 4 largely playable, pending final touches, and has received positive feedback from testers.

The simultaneous release across PC, Switch, and PS4, along with multiple language localizations, presents significant challenges, especially given this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox emphasized the need for meticulous quality assurance to ensure a polished final product.

The team's current priorities include:

  • Testing new game features
  • Finalizing PC and console versions
  • Japanese localization
  • Comprehensive bug testing

Chapter 3 development is complete (as per Fox's February newsletter), and early work on Chapter 5 has already begun, with map creation and battle design underway.

The newsletter included teasers: a snippet of Ralsei and Rouxls' dialogue, Elnina's character description, and a new item, the GingerGuard. Although the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has caused some initial disappointment, the anticipation for the combined length of Chapters 3 and 4 (longer than Chapters 1 and 2 combined) remains high.

While a specific release date is still pending, Fox is optimistic about future development, suggesting a smoother release schedule for subsequent chapters once Chapters 3 and 4 launch.
