While Netflix’s Devil May Cry: The Animated Series may not have been everyone’s favorite recent adaptation, series creator Adi Shankar recently announced that Season 2 will be a major departure from Season 1. If the first season didn’t resonate with you, it might be worth giving the show another chance.
“Season 2 is a very different show. Yes, Dante levels up,” the Dredd producer responded to a fan on Twitter on June 23. “His abilities improve, and you’ll see more of the iconic badass action that game fans expect. That said, I'm still crafting a story where compelling characters don’t just win—they evolve. What makes Dante interesting isn’t that he’s invincible, but that he learns and becomes stronger.”
However, some fans expressed dissatisfaction with how the series, based on Capcom’s popular game, has been developing. One person offered a particularly sharp observation about why certain viewers feel the adaptation hasn't met expectations.

Yes, Dante levels up. His skills improve and you’ll see him embrace more of the iconic badassery fans of the game expect.
That said, I'm still telling a story, and great characters don’t just win — they grow.

“It's not just about growth—it's how they grow. Fans aren’t upset because Dante isn’t instantly a badass,” the Twitter user explained. “They’re upset because you’ve missed the essence of his journey—and Lady’s, for that matter.”
That said, it’s important to remember Shankar’s adaptation is not intended to be canon, giving him creative freedom to explore new directions.
“Every franchise is unique,” he told another Twitter user about adapting video games for television. “It really depends on the intellectual property. With Devil May Cry, there was already a complex and sometimes conflicting continuity across games, manga, and other media—so taking a non-canon approach and building my own alternate universe allowed me to honor the spirit of the series without being constrained by timeline complexities.”
Devil May Cry Season 2 does not yet have a release date, but the series was officially renewed back in April.
IGN rated Devil May Cry Season 1 an 8/10, praising it as “a fun, if occasionally predictable, video game adaptation that features one of the best animated episodes of the year.”
