Elden Ring Movie Talk: Martin Hints at Limited Involvement

Mar 13,2025 Author: Brooklyn

George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his involvement. The Game of Thrones author conceived the world and history for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco heavily featured Martin's contribution in promotional materials, crediting both him and Hidetaka Miyazaki with creating the game's world.

While sidestepping questions about an Elden Ring sequel during IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin revealed discussions about an Elden Ring film adaptation are underway. This isn't the first time he's teased such a project; FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to an adaptation, but only with a strong collaborative partner due to FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production.

However, Martin admitted his heavy involvement in an Elden Ring movie might be limited by his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. He's significantly behind schedule on the long-awaited sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire, a delay he acknowledges openly, even questioning its eventual completion. The protracted wait for The Winds of Winter, following the 2011 release of A Dance with Dragons, has been a source of considerable fan anticipation and speculation.

Martin detailed his contribution to Elden Ring, explaining his collaboration with FromSoftware on world-building. He helped establish the game's backstory, creating the history that predates the events within the game's present. He worked extensively on the lore, including the magic and runes, and collaborated with the development team over several sessions.

When asked if unused material exists for potential future installments, Martin confirmed that a wealth of world-building details were created beyond what's presented in the game, a common occurrence in large-scale fantasy projects, comparing it to the extensive background lore found in Tolkien's works. The possibility of this unused material finding its way into a future Elden Ring adaptation remains open.
