Excitement is building among fans of The Elder Scrolls series as Bethesda is reportedly gearing up to announce a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the coming weeks, with a release expected soon after. NatetheHate, a leaker with a proven track record for accurately predicting the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, took to Twitter to reveal that the Oblivion remake will be unveiled either this month or next month, a claim that has been corroborated by VGC. While the release window remains somewhat uncertain, NatetheHate suggests a release before June, whereas VGC indicates it could be as early as April.
The anticipation surrounding this remake was fueled further in January when Mp1st reported on inadvertently disclosed details by a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio. Microsoft, when approached by IGN for comment, remained tight-lipped. According to Mp1st, Virtuos has utilized Unreal Engine 5 to completely overhaul Bethesda's beloved open-world RPG, suggesting a significant rework rather than a simple remaster. Allegedly, the gameplay has been enhanced with changes to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD).
Among the reported gameplay adjustments, Blocking has been revamped with inspiration drawn from action games and Soulslikes, addressing the original's "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons are now supposedly highlighted, and damage calculations have been updated. The effect of depleting Stamina leading to a knockdown is said to be more challenging to achieve. Furthermore, the HUD has been redesigned for better clarity, hit reactions have been introduced for more responsive gameplay, and Archery has been modernized for both first and third-person perspectives.

Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023 when documents from the Federal Trade Commission versus Microsoft trial over the Activision Blizzard acquisition revealed several unannounced Bethesda projects slated for release in the coming years. A document from July 2020, prior to Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, listed an Oblivion Remaster planned for the financial year 2022, alongside other titles such as an Indiana Jones game, Doom Year Zero with DLC, and more.
However, many of these projects faced delays or cancellations. For instance, Doom Year Zero evolved into Doom: The Dark Ages, set for a May release, while the Indiana Jones game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, did not launch until December 2024. The Elder Scrolls 6 also missed its financial year 2024 target.
As for the Oblivion project, it was originally referred to as a remaster, but it appears the scope may have expanded into a full remake. With Bethesda poised to make an official announcement, the gaming community eagerly awaits further details on this highly anticipated title.
With Microsoft now embracing multiplatform releases and the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, there's speculation that the Oblivion remake could launch across multiple platforms, including PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and potentially the new Nintendo console. If the Switch 2 hits the market around June, the Oblivion remake might even be part of its launch lineup, offering fans an expansive gaming experience across various systems.
