FF9 Remake Rumored, Prequel Book Confirmed

Final Fantasy IX Marks 25 Years

Picture Book Now on Sale via Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 Yen

Originally launched on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX continues its 25th-anniversary festivities with a new picture book titled "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure." Authored by Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki and illustrated by Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana, this 44-page prequel explores the backstory of Vivi and his adoptive grandfather, Quan, set before Vivi's adventure in Alexandria.

This is the second Final Fantasy picture book from Aoki and Itahana, following their previous work, "Chocobo and the Airship," which debuted in Japan in 2021 and globally in 2023. "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure" is available now in both digital and physical formats on Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 yen (about $9 USD).

Alongside the new book, Square Enix has rolled out an extensive line of Final Fantasy IX merchandise. While some items are exclusive to Japan, fans worldwide can shop for plush toys, apparel like Vivi's iconic hat, and a special vinyl album featuring original and newly recorded tracks on the Square Enix online store. These items are also available at the Square Enix pop-up store in Osaka, with a Tokyo location opening on July 25, 2025.

Limited-Run Final Fantasy IX & Zoff Collaboration Eyewear

As part of the anniversary, Square Enix has partnered with Japanese eyewear brand Zoff for a limited-edition collaboration. The collection features three distinct frame designs, each including exclusive lens cloths and themed cases. Currently, fittings are only available at select Zoff stores in Japan:

Despite the excitement surrounding the 25th anniversary, there has been no official word on a potential Final Fantasy IX remaster or remake. Square Enix's focus appears to be on commemorating the classic RPG with new merchandise, giving fans novel ways to celebrate. However, with the anniversary date nearing and the release of a newly arranged vinyl album, some enthusiasts are keeping their hopes alive for future announcements.
