Final Fantasy XIV Suspends Housing Demolitions Due to California Wildfires
Square Enix has temporarily halted automatic housing demolition timers in Final Fantasy XIV on North American servers due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. This affects players on the Aether, Primal, Crystal, and Dynamis data centers.
The decision comes just one day after the company restarted these timers following a previous suspension. The 45-day demolition timers are a standard practice to free up housing plots for inactive players and Free Companies. However, Square Enix routinely pauses these timers during significant real-world events to accommodate players who may be unable to access the game. A prior pause, ending January 8th, was attributed to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
This latest suspension, effective Thursday, January 9th, at 11:20 PM Eastern, provides a reprieve for players potentially impacted by the wildfires. No timeline has been given for the resumption of the automatic demolition timers. Square Enix assures players they will provide an update when a restart date is determined. Homeowners can still reset their timers to the full 45 days by logging into their estates.
The impact of the wildfires extends beyond the game; the popular web series Critical Role and an NFL playoff game have also been affected. This unexpected pause adds to the already eventful start of 2025 for Final Fantasy XIV players, who recently benefited from a free login campaign. The duration of this housing demolition moratorium remains uncertain.
