Warner Bros. and HBO have unveiled the initial six cast members who will portray reimagined versions of Hogwarts' beloved professors in the upcoming Harry Potter series.
The official casting announcement comes after months of fan speculation about how this Wizarding World adaptation will refresh the iconic story of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Leading the ensemble is John Lithgow (known for Conclave and Dexter), who accidentally revealed his casting as Albus Dumbledore earlier, alongside other actors whose participation had been widely discussed.
Two familiar faces joining the magical faculty include Nick Frost (of Shaun of the Dead fame) as the gentle giant Rubeus Hagrid, and rising star Paapa Essiedu (from I May Destroy You) taking on the complex role of Severus Snape. The star-studded lineup also features Janet McTeer as stern but caring Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon portraying the nervous Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as the grumpy caretaker Argus Filch.

"We're thrilled to collaborate with this exceptional cast who will breathe new life into these cherished characters," said showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer Mark Mylod in a joint statement.
The roles of Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape represent not just cornerstone characters of the Harry Potter universe, but cultural icons that will challenge these accomplished actors. Lithgow previously shared his mixed feelings about taking on the legendary headmaster role during an interview earlier this year.
"When the offer came during Sundance Film Festival, I faced a difficult decision," Lithgow confessed to ScreenRant in February. "This role will likely become my late-career signature. But the creative team's passion convinced me, even though I'll be celebrating my 87th birthday by the time we wrap!"

While the series hasn't announced its premiere date, production is expected to commence shortly. Details remain scarce about how this adaptation will distinguish itself from both the original novels and the blockbuster film series. Warner Bros. has confirmed the show will explore Harry's journey more thoroughly than the movies could within their runtime. Controversial author J.K. Rowling remains involved as an executive producer.
