NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, has achieved a remarkable 230,000 peak concurrent players on Steam since its PC debut. This impressive launch also secured it a position as the seventh top seller and fifth most-played game on the platform. However, this initial surge raises questions about potential player retention.
Scheduled for a mobile release in September, Once Human has already announced exciting updates. These include a PvP mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a challenging new PvE area in a northern mountain region with unique enemies. Set in a world ravaged by a catastrophic event leading to supernatural occurrences, Once Human is a highly anticipated title from NetEase.
Despite its successful PC launch, NetEase has surprisingly delayed the mobile release, still targeting September. Nevertheless, the game maintains its strong position as a top seller and most-played game.
Cause for Concern? The use of "peak" player count (230,000) is significant. The average player count is likely lower, and a post-launch drop-off could be a warning sign for NetEase, especially considering the game had over 300,000 Steam wishlists.
While NetEase is a mobile gaming giant, its foray into the PC market is ambitious. Although Once Human boasts impressive graphics and gameplay, a rapid shift in primary audience might prove challenging.
The mobile release of Once Human remains highly anticipated, regardless of the delay. In the meantime, check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far) and our most anticipated mobile games of the year for more gaming options!
