Quick Navigation
Hyper Light Breaker deliberately leaves many mechanics unexplained, fostering a sense of discovery as players learn optimal strategies. Among these, the lock-on targeting system stands out as crucial for combat efficiency.
While locking onto enemies keeps your focus sharp, it's not always ideal. The system works best in specific one-on-one encounters. This guide breaks down enemy targeting mechanics and provides strategic advice on when to use lock-on versus free camera mode in this Synthwave-inspired roguelite.
Mastering Enemy Targeting in Hyper Light Breaker

To lock onto an enemy, center them in your view and press the right analog stick (R3). The system automatically selects your target unless they're surrounded by numerous foes. Successful locking zooms your view slightly and displays a targeting reticle.
Direct line of sight isn't necessary - you can lock onto any enemy visible on-screen within targeting range.
Locking on alters your character's movement while the camera tracks your target. This creates circular movement patterns around enemies, but beware - fast-moving targets can cause rapid camera shifts that may disorient your directional inputs.
To switch targets while locked on, tilt the right analog stick left or right. The reticle will shift to the nearest valid enemy within range.
Cancel lock-on by pressing R3 again or moving too far from your target. These controls can be customized in the game's settings menu.
Optimal Camera Modes: Lock-On vs Free Cam

The lock-on system excels in specific scenarios but becomes risky in others. Reserve it for solo encounters against bosses or elite enemies (marked by yellow health bars) after clearing surrounding foes.
Since locking on narrows your focus to one target, surrounding enemies can easily attack from blind spots, making group encounters particularly dangerous.
Free cam remains superior for most combat situations, especially against multiple or weaker enemies. The wider field of view improves situational awareness and reaction time.
For boss fights after eliminating minor threats, lock-on keeps your primary target centered. Switch back to free cam if additional enemies appear, then re-engage lock-on when you regain control of the battlefield.
During Extraction sequences where waves of regular enemies precede miniboss spawns, maintain free cam until finishing weaker foes. Only activate lock-on when you can focus exclusively on the tougher opponent.
